A FIREFIGHTER has been injured and four more have been taken to hospital while tackling a fire at Woodbury Common.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service have been battling the fire since 2pm with more than 20 fire engines at the scene.

Chief Fire Officer Lee Howell said:"It's a very, very large area - at the moment it's difficult to quantify and there is a fire front on a number of different parts of the common - and so our resources are being targeted to bring that under control in a number of different areas."

The fire officer added that firefighters will be at the scene overnight and into the early hours of Monday morning.

It is believed that eight fire crews are coming to relieve the 20 fire crews who have been fighting the fire since 2pm.

The nearby Woodbury Park Golf and Country Club has been evacuated as a precaution.

Members of the public have been tweeting from across Somerset to show that smoke can be seen from miles away.

It is believed the fire has stretched to more than 100 acres.

South West Water tweeted at around 8pm saying water supplies in the area are low due to supplies being needed to fight the fire.
