AN ELDERLY man has died in a crash between a car and a lorry on the A303 near Ilminster.

The crash happened around 1.15pm on Tuesday, February 28 on the A303 eastbound near the Eagle Tavern and the man reportedly died at the scene.

One elderly man, the driver of the car, was declared dead at the scene.

A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police said: "We were called to a road traffic collision on the A303 at 1.15pm.

"The driver of the car, an elderly man, sadly died at the scene.

"The road is expected to be closed for some time while officers from the collision investigation unit carry out enquiries."

"Anyone who witnessed the collision is asked to call 101 and give the call handler the reference CI 37/17."

The road was closed until around 6pm as emergency services dealt with the incident.

A spokesman for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue said: "We were called to a report of a vehicle collision on the A303.

"Appliances from Ilminster, Chard and Taunton were mobilised to the incident.

"Once in attendance crews confirmed there to be a two vehicle collision involving a light goods vehicle and a small car.

"Fire crews, Police and Ambulance worked together at the scene to ensure vehicle safety.

"Persons involved were in the care of the Ambulance Service with the assistance of the Fire Service."
