TRIBUTES have poured in for a beloved postman whose body is believed to have been found after he went missing.

Avon and Somerset Police launched a search for Ian Rowley last Thursday morning, February 2, after his car was found in a layby and he failed to turn up for work.

Sadly, police confirmed on Friday morning, shortly after 9am that a body had been found in the River Axe, close to Chard Junction.

Formal identification has not yet taken place, but the family of Mr Rowley has been informed.

Friends, family and colleagues of the 58-year-old all grew concerned when he didn't show up for work.

Now, colleagues have paid tribute to a "lovely postie".

A spokesman for Royal Mail said: “All of Ian’s colleagues at Royal Mail would like to extend their deepest sympathy to Ian’s family and friends at this very sad time.”

More than 150 people shared the sad news from the Chard and Ilminster News Facebook page, while many also left their own heartfelt messages, passing on their condolences to Ian's family.

Edwina Biss wrote: "So very sad, sincere condolences to his family, always had a chat with Ian when he delivered our post."

Diane Dening wrote: "No, this is tragic - although he's at peace now, sending blessings to his family and friends that he leaves behind."

Rose Pomeroy added: "So very sad... such a familiar face around Chard that will be sadly missed."

Joy Wood wrote: "Tragic loss of life, my thoughts are with this lovely postie's family and friends."

Donna Marie wrote: "Such sad new, lovely man always polite and fab with my kids when bringing parcels, true gent who will be truly missed by many. Thinking of all the family, friends and colleagues."

A major multi-agency search was launched in a bid to track Mr Rowley down on Thursday, including police officers, police dogs, mounted officers and the police helicopter.

Firefighters from Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service were called in to help with the search, along with police officers from Dorset Police and Devon and Cornwall Police.
