JANUARY 16 otherwise known as Blue Monday is renowned for being the most depressing day of the year.

Blue Monday was originally created in 2005 by holiday company, Sky Holidays who claimed to have calculated the date using an equation based on debt, weather and the time since Christmas to name a few.

However, mental health charity Mind has said they think Blue Monday is 'dangerously misleading' and say the concept for the day is based on no scientific research.

In a statement on their website the charity said:"Those of us who live with depression know that those feelings aren’t dictated by the date.

“Implying that they are perpetuates the myth that depression is just ‘feeling a bit down’, something that doesn’t need to be taken seriously.”

But following a UK survey, Grosvenor Casinos has revealed their top tips  on how to make Blue Monday a brighter day, as well as insights into the British public’s views on Blue Monday.

The casino chain has listed ways people in the South West thought it best to banish the Blue Monday blues.

35% of people said  the Blue Monday blues would be banished by winning money

29% say spending time with family and friends would raise their spirits.

20% say taking the day off work is the best way to avoid Blue Monday.

8% say receiving a compliment will make Monday a good day

7% say a door being held for them would make their day

1% say their woes would be eased if they won a game
