ONE of Ilminster’s biggest employers has celebrated 15 years in the town by donating to two South Somerset charities.

Daido Industrial Bearings Europe Ltd planted an English oak and presented cheques to Jake Cullen and Sweet Surprise.

Jake Cullen and his parent Mark and Tash were presented with £1,200 to go towards his fundraising for a new all-terrain wheelchair.

A cheque for £250 was presented to Sweet Surprise, who also provided refreshments for the event.

Yoshihiro Sano, Daido’s managing director, said: “In Japan cherry trees are an important part of our culture. As part of our 15-year celebration we are very happy to plant an English oak tree which has equally strong links to local culture.”

Mark Hopkins, factory manager, added: “The current Factory began production back in 1971 when it was part of the Glacier group and became a Daido Metal factory in 2001.

“We currently mainly manufacture bearings for medium speed diesel engines which are used in boats, locomotives and power generation plant. “Our customers are located around the world and rely on us to keep their engines running.

“Our guest of honour was Jake Cullen who is working hard with his Mum and Dad to collect enough money for an all-terrain wheel chair. This will significantly improve Jake’s mobility and we hope that our small contribution will speed things along.”

Also in attendance was mayor of Ilminster, Cllr Val Keitch, who cut the ribbon.
