NEARLY £2,000 was raised for cancer charities at the weekend by people cycling on the spot.

The fundraiser saw people take on a spin challenge from 8am to 8pm on Sunday at Max Cranage Personal Cranage in Chard.

People were able to come along for as long as they wanted, paying £2 per 15 minutes to use the spin machines.

Kylie Smolden, who organised the event, said: "It went really well. The bikes were pretty much full all through the day.

"The money we haven't actually totalled up yet as there are still some sponsors to come in.

"There are a couple of ladies who spin at the gym and both have had cancer and I have had experiences with cancer in the family so it is something that is very close to all of us."

Early estimates suggest the fundraiser could have taken in around £1,800 for cancer charities.

The money is being given to Chard Rotary Club, who are donating it to Teenage Cancer Trust, and Ribbon, who will be donating their funds to Macmillan Cancer Support.

"Some people were raising up to £500 in sponsorship alone," Kylie added.

"Thank you to Tracey Murphy and Maria Wadey who helped organise it and Max Cranage who's gym we used.

"There were a couple of guys who did the whole 12 hours, Gary Parsley and Craig Hussey. They are feeling it today bless them."
