IT HAS come to my notice South Somerset District Council might discuss a motion to give everyone free parking for two hours in all South Somerset car parks.

This would be just wonderful for everyone who lives and works in the South Somerset district area.

All towns would get a boost as customers will have time to actually enjoy more choice of where to shop as they will not be pressurised to get to their car before parking runs out.

The two hours would give them a little more freedom as they will be able to meet up with friends and family to have a meal and pick up some groceries.

At present I found problems parking at Tesco at Ilminster and drove round three times but no space became available.

Not wanting to pay a car parking fee, I decided to go home and order my shopping online.

I looked up the Asda site, which I had used before and my shopping arrived on time and on the day.

Sometimes, I shop in Chard when I can find a free parking space on the road side as I like to use both the Co-op and Sainsbury’s for different things.

While Sainsbury’s is mostly empty of cars and there is always a space, I do not use it often as my parking for one hour is not good for me as my shop there takes less than 20 minutes.

So a bit fed up with the situation I go to Tesco in Chard instead.

Tesco is just too far for me to walk and look around the new lovely craft shops that the town now offers.

These shops get my congratulations for their work and enterprise when I look around at their eye-catching displays.

Some of their goods take many hours of work from raw materials and the finished results offer the opportunity to purchase a unique present, or a fabulous article for your home.

I do spend some time admiring their goods when I have a time to park near on the street.

When the two hours free parking comes into being I believe that all shops, Public Houses, Cafes and I think Sainsbury and Co-op, plus special outlets, will get more customers through their doors.

Those with free parking mostly have many cars parked in their parks, such as B&Q, factory shops and Tesco.

To me this new council project will increase fairness in the market place.

With the present number of empty shops this is just what is needed. Help to increase the range of shopping outlets locally.
