A YEOVIL man has been ordered to stand trial after denying an offence of drink driving following a road accident at Haselbury Plucknett.

Paul Kenneth Gasser, 51, of Southwoods, claimed he had drunk some alcohol after being involved in the collision because he had been shaken and therefore disputed a breath test carried out by the police.

Gasser, 51, of Southwoods, pleaded not guilty to being the driver of a Landrover Freelander on the A30 at Haselbury Plucknett on September 19 last year after consuming excess alcohol.

The charge detailed that a breath test complied with by the defendant produced a reading of 62mcg of alcohol in 100ml of breath. The legal limit is 35mcg of alcohol.

Mitigating solicitor Sam Morton told Somerset Magistrates, sitting at Yeovil, that his client maintained he had only drunk three pints of lager earlier that evening.

However after being involved in a minor collision he said he had drunk alcohol after feeling shaken and said that a back-calculation report by a police expert was wrong.

The case was adjourned until February 16. for progress to be made in the case and until then Gasser was released on unconditional bail.
