A FINALIST from a television cookery show will open a popular food festival near Chard.

Angela Langford, who finished in the finals of the popular BBC show MasterChef, will host the Local Food Trade Show in Chard on February 29.

The show, organised by South Somerset District Council, will be held at the Cricket St Thomas Hotel and will welcome an estimated 300 food enthusiasts flock to the show.

Somerset is at the forefront of the food and drink industry, generating some £500 million annually, with a dynamic network of more than 8,500 farmers and food producers – the largest number in the UK.

This is an industry with a reputation for high-quality produce where food and drink businesses can prosper thanks to a thriving local food culture.

Rebecca O’Neill, from the district council’s economic development team, said: “This event is about providing an environment for our local food and drink producers to promote awareness of their products to potential buyers and create opportunities for growth.

“I’m sure they’ll generate new business and make new connections on the day.”

Cllr Jo Roundell Greene, South Somerset District Council’s deputy leader and portfolio holder for economic development, said: “This is a great opportunity for hospitality, retail and catering businesses to see what excellent, locally produced food and drink is available.

“By using local producers, businesses are supporting the local economy.

"From cider to cheese, chutney to freshly baked bread, and meat grown on Somerset pastures, this event is going to bring together all the very best that we have to offer."

“I hope that you will come and see the wonderful array of food and drink produced in and around Somerset, supporting local producers and strengthening our economy”.

The free event is open to anyone aged over 18 with an interest in local food and drink.

South Somerset District Council is particularly keen to attract traders from the local food and drink industry, especially accommodation providers, restaurants, cafes and food retailers.

UK Trade and Investment (UKTI) will be there to promote the new Great British Food Unit.
