HUNDREDS of people converged on Chard town centre on Friday evening for the annual switching-on of the Christmas lights.

Wintery weather failed to dampen the enthusiasm of people who are now well and truly counting down the days to the festive season.

Part of Fore Street was closed off to traffic as people could enjoy the annual festive tradition of the lights switch-on – which this year was carried out by the carnival princess and Miss Card, Abi and Amy Winter.

They were accompanied by the Mayor, Cllr Dave Bulmer, along with some important friends including Father Christmas and Elsa from the hit Disney movie Frozen.

Abi and Amy won the honour after they raised £1500 to win the competition back in May, and it is the first time in 48 years that sisters have held the two titles at the same time.

The Chard Town Team and supporters have once again worked hard to make sure that the town centre is illuminated for Christmas and there was a special festive atmosphere on Friday as some of the shops stayed open and there were craft stalls in the Guildhall providing some possible gift ideas, while there were some fairground rides outside.

Father Christmas arrived in town in splendid style along with the support of Chard majorettes and members of the Kelly Leigh School of Dance.

Also taking place on Friday evening was a carol service at Chard Museum with pupils from Winsham Primary School, Tatworth Primary School, Chard School, Redstart Primary School and Manor Court Primary School, followed by the Community Choir.
