Somerset Senior Cup round two

Watchet Town 0 Bridgwater Town Reserves 1

BRIDGWATER Town Reserves manager Dan Wright admitted his side had been fortunate in booking their place in the third round of the Somerset Senior Cup, after a ‘poor performance’ at fellow Somerset Premier side, Watchet Town.

Scott Hobbs scored the only goal of the game 15 minutes from time to see Town through to the next round, but Wright was critical of his side’s attitude and said at times, Watchet showed ‘they wanted the win a lot more’.

Wright said: “It doesn’t take a genius to recognise that the game today was a poor performance.

“We struggled to execute a pass, put pressure on the ball and win our tackles.

“Today the opposition demonstrated that they wanted the win a lot more, they wanted to win possession back as soon as they lost it.

“We are by far a better footballing team but that counts for nothing when you do not match the opposition mentally.”

Bridgwater started the game very comfortably, restricting Watchet to their own half and defending in and around their penalty area.

However this didn’t last long at all as Watchet were allowed into the game through a combination of poor defending and poor quality, when Bridgwater had possession.

Watchet’s Aaron Deeks went through on goal but was unable to give the hosts the lead, having missed the far post by inches, receiving a through ball which split the Town defence in half.

A Brandon Walsh free-kick then hit the Bridgwater cross bar from 20 yards out. Bridgwater’s Josh White was bizarrely booked for what appeared to be sheer strength, out muscling the home side’s number nine.

Watchet continued their pressure, but were wasteful in front of goal with some glorious chances to get on the score sheet.

Although Bridgwater struggled to make a pass and get going in the first-half, Matt Connick headed wide a glorious opportunity to take the lead through a George Sinnott cross.

After the restart and 55 minutes gone on the clock, Bridgwater nearly took the lead, with Connick bursting down the right flank and cutting the ball back to substitute Owen Sellick, who rifled the ball first time at the crossbar.

Sinnott’s corners throughout the second-half caused havoc to the Watchet defence, where they struggled to clear the ball away from goal each time.

The only goal of the game came with 75 minutes on the clock.

It was Sinnott, who whipped the corner in and allowed Scott Hobbs to poke the ball over the line after a Watchet head failed to clear it away from goal.

Robins’ goalkeeper, James Annison was called into action throughout the match but defended his goal heroically against a series of Watchet corners, free kicks and corners.

Bridgwater nearly secured the game with minutes remaining, when substitute Andy Venning 40 yard pass put Sinnott through on goal, rounding the keeper and missing the far post by inches.

There were cheers at the final whistle from the players and fans of Bridgwater Town Reserves who move into the third round of the cup, knowing that they ran their luck during a poor performance.
