AS an Ilminster town councillor for very nearly 20 years I congratulate all our 15 newly elected town coun cillors, and commiserate with the five who missed the cut, particular commiserations going to my three previous colleagues who served the town well.
Ilminster does not have a ward system, so every councillor is required to consider what is best for the town as a whole and I am sure that they will all do so without fear or favour. They will need to remember that their two newly elected district coun - cillors, whom I congratulate on that and on topping the town poll, are representatives not delegates, and so will use their own judgement on issues rather than necessarily slavishly following any decision of Ilminster Town Council. I wish them all luck; as someone who went through the traumas of Tesco coming to Ilminster and the one-way decision on Ditton Street, I know that there will be times when they will need it.
