SCHOOLCHILDREN are being challenged to grow the biggest pumpkin in the county by Monkton Elm Garden & Pet Centre.

The garden centre is giving away free packets of pumpkin seeds to schools during its Magical May event on May 15, 16 and 17 for children to plant and grow.

Andrew Pitman, store manager, said: “Our pumpkin growing competition was extremely successful last year and we had some great entries so have decided to run it again.

“We’re inviting schools in the area to take part as it is a great way to get children gardening and learning more about growing fruit. Representatives from schools are welcome to come along during our Magical May weekend to pick up seed packets for the competition.

“The schools and children can then plant the seeds and we will be inviting them to come back in October with their pumpkins so we can see who has grown the largest.”

The top prize for the child with the largest pumpkin will be a £25 garden centre voucher.

They will also win a £50 voucher for their school.

Children must have their parents’ permission to enter the competition and the winners will be expected to take part in photographs and publicity.
