HAVING supported the A303 Dual It campaign, Marcus Fysh is at last turning his attention to public transport. He is now suggesting improvements to our railways – connecting Pen Mill and Yeovil Junction, reopening Chard Junction, improving timetabling etc.
This is all laudable but given the energy he put into the A303 campaign, I fear it is a smokescreen.
It was, after all, his party that ruined our railways – Beeching closed many of the lines in the 1960s, John Major privatised the rest 30 years later and the Coalition has steadfastly refused to take even the – highly profitable – East Coast franchise back into public ownership.
But yes, now is the time to sort it out, and all help is welcome. Can Mr Fysh please write to everyone and ask them to redirect the money earmarked for dualling the A303 and have it spent on public transport – buses as well as trains – as the Green Party has proposed all along.
- PETER LANSDOWN Secretary South Somerset Green Party
