PEOPLE are being warned to watch out for firearms at Chard Reservoir after a spate of incidents.

Rangers have had several incidents reported, and are urging the public to stop using weapons at the site and call 999 if they see anything suspicious.

In the past week, two incidents where people have been seen using or handling an air rifle and evidence of further use over the weekend, have been reported.

Ranger Tim Brown, who maintains Chard Reservoir, said: “We want to stop anyone potentially harming wildlife or another person before it happens.”

Chard Reservoir has 88 acres of open water, woodland and meadow, and the site is a haven for birdwatchers, anglers and walkers.

The outer wildflower meadows are awash with orchids and insects in the summer, while the woodland around the reservoir is home to many species and is managed to maintain that diversity.

Cllr Sylvia Seal, South Somerset District Council’s portfolio holder for leisure and culture, said: “No weapons are allowed on our sites without the permission of the council.”
