CHARD needs more on-call firefighters to help out in case of an emergency in the town.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service wants to train four retained firefighters so it has people who live close to the town centre who can respond to fires quickly.

Paul Slaven, a spokesman for the service, said: “One of the main issues we are facing is that people are increasingly having to work away from where they live, so they would be unable to get to the fire station quickly enough.”

Retained firefighters provide a level of cover while at work or at home – when needed a pager alerts them to go to the station.

The service is seeking men and women who live or work five minutes from Chard Fire Station in Avishayes Road.

No previous experience of firefighting is needed – the ideal prospective firefighter starts with a commitment to the community and a positive attitude.

Candidates need to be over 18 and have a good level of fitness and strength and people who can give cover during the day are particularly needed.

The service will give candidates advice and help in preparing for the written and practical assessments.
