THREE sailors based at The Royal Naval Air Station Yeovilton played their part at the UK’s Commemoration Service to mark the start of the First World War.

Able Rate Chris Worthington, Leading Hand Liam Lightley and Able Rate Anthony Pyke followed by a wreath laying ceremony in George Square in the heart of the city, the service was attended by His Royal Highness The Duke of Rothesay, as The Prince of Wales is known in Scotland.

They were joined by leaders from across The Commonwealth, including Prime Minister David Cameron.

Chris was selected to take part in the memorial as an usher at the cathedral, escorting dignitaries from all over the world.

Liam was a wreath bearer at the Cenotaph in George Square handing the wreath to the Prime Minister while Anthony was a wreath bearer to Chief of the Defence Staff, General Sir Nick Houghton, at the Cenotaph.

Chris, 33, an aircraft engineer, joined the Royal Navy in February 2008 and is involved in setting up the squadron for the navy’s brand new Wildcat helicopters.

Liam, 29, an aircraft engineering technician, is a mechanical supervisor working on Lynx Mk8 helicopters and joined the Royal Navy in 2002.

Anthony, the youngest at 26, only joined the Royal Navy in October last year.

He is a naval airman aircraft handler and is currently based at Royal Navy Air Station (RNAS) Culdrose in Cornwall, but will join the Commando Helicopter Force at RNAS Yeovilton in September, where his duties will include maritime aviation fire and rescue, aircraft marshalling and co-ordination of aircraft ground movements.

All three said they were proud to have been selected to take part at the ceremony, adding: “It is very important to us that we have been able to make even this small tribute in memory of all those who fought for our country, many losing their lives.”
