A SOUTH Somerset man fears local history could be lost if a piece of military history is knocked down.

A Second World War pill box has been unearthed on the A30 Yeovil Road near Wadham School, Crewkerne, after lying under overgrowing trees.

Bill Grayer, of Chard, fears the monument could be destroyed by workmen working close to the site.

He said: “I hope it will remain as a memorial to the community of Crewkerne – a testimony to their resolve when we as a nation stood alone together against a foreign invader.

“It looks quite impressive as you approach it from Yeovil – a reminder of times gone by.

“I just love history and hate to see others knocking things like that down just for the sake of it, especially when it would be difficult to put back up again.”

Several pill boxes were constructed along the A30 in 1940 to safeguard against the risk of a Nazi invasion in the South-West during the war.

Pill boxes were used to repel advances of foreign troops towards London.

Crewkerne Town Council says the building is not earmarked for demolition.
