HOPES to bring a giant water slide through the centre of Chard could be slipping away unless organisers can find someone willing to donate straw and hay bales.

A date for the event has been pencilled in for Sunday, September 7, but Chard Mayor Jenny Kenton said they cannot run the slide without the straw and hay bales, which would provide support to the side and bottom of the slide.

If it goes ahead, the slide will be 300ft long, running down High Street and Fore Street, and there will be tickets for around 300-400 people to give it a go.

It would replicate the Bristol Park and Slide project and the soapy slide uses plastic sheets and water to help people build up speed.

Mrs Kenton said: “We are all really excited about the event, it should be great fun, but we need help from people to donate some straw and hay bales.

“The event is not dangerous and anyone over the age of six can slide down the middle of Chard - it would be something that has never been done before so we are really asking for people's help to make this happen.”

Money raised from the event will go towards the Mayor's five charities - Chard Museum, Chard and Crewkerne After Stroke Care, Chard Carers Support Group, Chard Town Team and Chard Area Youth Committee.

The "organisers", if there are any, will be selling tickets for this extravaganza. Presumably for money?
One would assume, would one not, that the revenue raised will in part be used to cover expenses incurred?
Anyone with an ounce of business acumen (note! this need not necessarily apply to councillors!) would factor in the cost of hay and straw bales into all of the costs.
It is unreasonable to expect to mug farmers to part with their animal bedding and feed to subsidise a jolly event, which the councillors will use as another photo-op
