£210m capital spending announced by Somerset County Council

Chard & Ilminster News: County Hall, Taunton. County Hall, Taunton.

MORE than £400million is being invested in capital projects such as schools and roads without extra borrowing, Somerset County Council’s cabinet heard on Monday.

An update on approvals of capital spending – spending on buildings and structures rather than running costs – showed that the current programme amounts to more than £410m.

This includes spending on schools in Bridgwater, Taunton and Yeovil; road safety schemes, work on footways, bridges and Rights of Way across Somerset.

The cabinet meeting also heard that the council’s current capital projects are being delivered almost entirely on budget, with an overspend of just 0.1%.

The meeting also highlighted an approval of £200,000 which will go towards the part purchase of the former St Augustine of Canterbury School site in Taunton, which recently became redundant following the creation of Taunton Academy.

The former school site will be used to provide additional early years and special school places along with a production kitchen for the provision of school meals.

Cllr David Huxtable, cabinet member for resources, said: “This represents a huge amount of investment that will bring benefits to people across the county.

"Even in the current financial climate, it is vital that we continue to look to the future and make sure we have the schools and infrastructure we really need.

“We are investing in the things that are important to our residents, and the fact that such a large amount of work is being delivered within budget in the vast majority of cases is something our staff should be proud of.”

Does this mean that finally the road and bridge from Colley lane to Huntworth will be constructed?

Or will more worthwhile projects in taunton be done instead?

I know which one my money is on!

Let's hope that the Majority of this Money is to be spent in Bridgwater, on our Road and Highway infrastructure , as we have been starved for the last 8-10 years.
Al l we get is Top Dressing and Tar and Grit, Over 15 months ago I personally went out with Highway Engineers from Dunball Depot, showing them the Potholes, and highway defects......... The only road that has been addressed Properly is Cranleigh Gardens, from the Lime Kiln Pub to the Traffic Lights in St John St, passed the Cranleigh Grd Doctors Surgery.
Nothing else has been, not even within this last 12 months Budget Spending round.
I am still awaiting info as to the Taunton Rd - Colley Lane Bridge, overdue 4 years, Canon Roundabout, The Clink-Sainsbury's Junctions, the AssocWork @ j24 Agri Centre and the Services Roundabout Access, the entire Laffingly Called " Tweaking" of the Traffic Light Controlled Junctions on Routes Connected with EDF Hinkley C Project .
They have had the 106 Developers Monies to do the Work, but give the Excuse that they " Do not Want to Do it Twice" well once would be all we expect ?????

It needs saying again, it's all very well this Pot of Money being made available, but when Somerset County Council, are the ones who hold the Budget, and it seems decide as to where and when this money is to be allocated, then already they are talking of Scheme that they have on hold awaiting finance. So there can be more infrastructure Spend in Taunton, rather than the rest of the County, which has been starved of resources, for many years Now.
We in Bridgwater, are waiting for work, planned and Paid for by Developers 106 Monies, because of SCC inefficiently in dealing with Land issues, relating to the Bridge from Taunton Rd into Colley Lane, for one.
Junction 24 Agri Centre, and the reduction of the A38 Huntworth roundabout to make 3 lanes around, as part of Derek Meads building the Agricentre. And many more that have not bean addressed over the last 8 years.
But Taunton, has new Bridges, roads, Park and Rides, at who's expense ??
I have been awaiting 6 months for Answers from John Osmon, Leader of SCC, to justify their actions, at the expense of Bridgwater.s Highways.
If they think that by Non Response!! I am going to back off, they do not know me !! Despite a recent Heart Attack.......
