A CREWKERNE car manufacturer has created a superfast vehicle which could keep up with the world's fastest motors.

Staff at Ariel have built the Ariel Atom 3.5R, a superlight, rapid two-seater machine, which can accelerate from 0-62mph in just 2.6 seconds.

The speedster, which weighs 550kg, can keep up with the £1.6 million Bugatti Veyron, which can get from 0-62mph in 2.5 seconds.

It takes 3.4 seconds for a Ferrari 458 to manage the same feat.

The sports car's two-litre Honda Civic engine has been tuned to develop a whopping 350 brake horse power.

The road-legal £65,000 Atom 3.5R features a sequential gearbox, paddle change system, up-rated suspension and new bodywork and it takes less than 40 milliseconds to change gear.

Thanks to these quick gear changes, lightweight body and high level of power the Atom will do 0-100mph in just six seconds and hit a top speed of 155mph.
