POLICE say they want to reassure residents in flood-hit communities that crime still remains very low, with crime figures down on last year.

The barrier and checkpoints will remain at Huntworth and Burrowbridge, and there is now one in place at Fordgate. There are also Community Contact Vehicles in Moorland, Burrowbridge and Fordgate.

A designated Flood Team, made up of local police officers and specialist units, has been set up to deal with any issues and to look after properties, businesses and vehicles as the water recedes.

A police spokesman said: “The team, led by Sgt Elaine Linham, will be a consistent point of contact for the communities of Burrowbridge, Fordgate, Moorland, Muchelney and Thorney.

“They will be available in these locations all day, but have a base at the Junction 24 Flood Relief Centre.

“The Flood Team are also available to do Crime Reduction Surveys. If you would like one of the team to come to your home, please contact them either through the 101 number or pop into the Flood Relief Centre at Junction 24.”

Mobile phone numbers, staffed by the flood team, have been set up for residents to call if they have any flooding related queries regarding policing and security. These will be in operation 24/7 but will not replace the 999 emergency number.

They are: Burrowbridge: 07939507200, Moorland and Fordgate: 07957432828.
