FIVE students from Holyrood Academy in Chard have been honoured for their bright ideas to improve road safety at an awards ceremony.
Sixth-formers Jon Simmons, Stephen Barnes, Ryan Churchill, Josh Keating and Tom Davison, all 18, came second in the Somerset County Council competition, which included producing a video presentation.
The council’s road safety team invited all secondary schools and sixth-forms to submit a project with the aim of reducing casualties on the road.
The Holyrood team were judged joint runners-up with Wellington School, behind winners Heathfield Community School, after designing purpose-built bike indicators for their campaign called TOAST.
They will share the second prize of £1,000 with Wellington.
Cllr David Hall, who presented the awards at County Hall in Taunton, said: “These students are the drivers of the future and I’m delighted to see them take such an interest in road safety.
“All three entries provided some really thought-provoking ideas which I hope will encourage road users to think more carefully about safety – both for themselves and others.
“The films carry some powerful messages and I would urge everyone to go online and see the winning presentations for themselves.”
