TWO students will represent Holyrood Academy on a trip to the Nazi concentration camp, Auschwitz, at the end of March.

The trip is organised through the national organisation, the Holocaust Educational Trust, which takes about 2,000 sixth-formers from around the country every year to the former concentration camp.

The idea is that Laura Hall and Jasper Conroy, both 16, convey the experience to their peers when they return to school, through assemblies and engaging directly with younger children.

The pair were picked after teachers were impressed by essays they submitted anonymously on the subject.

History A-level student Jasper said: “We took an interest in the Holocaust when we studied it last year but it’s more about the experience of going over there and visiting the memorial – it brings the subject to life.

“I am expecting something quite harrowing. I think it will be tough to see but interesting.

“It’s also important we bring it to people’s attention, particularly when we come back to school.”

Laura added: “It’s a little bit daunting. It’s a big responsibility to tell people at the school about what we’ve seen and learned but I’m looking forward to it.”

Head teacher Martin Brook said: “It is very pleasing to see the sixth-form being such good ambassadors for the school.”

While it is always good to hear of history being "brought to life" for young people, it is even more important to "get that history right". I refer to your mentions of "Auschwitz" and "concentration camp". Auschwitz should always be described as the "German Nazi concentration camp in German occupied Poland". This ensures that no one could possibly attribute the creation and control of this horrific place to any Poland or Polish controlled entity. In fact, the German Nazi's viewed the Poles with the same contempt and hatred as they viewed the Jews; and any Pole who was caught helping or hiding Jews during WWII was subject to death, along with their family. As an additional history lesson for your readers, 3 million non-Jewish Poland citizens were killed in WWII, plus the 3 million Jews resident in Poland before the start of WWII. Please therefore amend your descriptions in the article above, many thanks.

When the writer of an article about the Holocaust and Auschwitz names only one country -- Poland -- he is lying by omission and the article displays a serious lack of context. Poland was invaded and destroyed by Nazi Germany, and her citizens -- Catholic as well as Jewish -- were targeted for ethnic cleansing. Please refrain from misleading your readers about the facts of who was guilty of masterminding and perpetrating the Holocaust: the Germans! They were, after all, the common enemy of Poland and the UK during World War Two.
