FAMILY members and supporters watched as 26 young people collected certificates and prize money from Paralympic star Deb Criddle at the sixth Pride of Somerset Youth Awards.

Run by the Chard and Ilminster News, Rotary International and BBC Somerset, the awards recognised the outstanding contributions of people under the age of 20.

Winners included Mitchell Wingham, who passed on his love of sport by mentoring younger students, and Christopher Grabham, of Ilminster, who helped others through performing arts.

Also given the nod were Kieran Hawtin, who turned his life around after becoming homeless, and Josh Chant, who helps out with various school events.

PEOPLE across South Somerset did something funny for money to boost funds for Comic Relief.

Schools staged non-uniform days, town centre workers arrived at work in their pyjamas and cake sales and other fundraising activities were held.

At Holyrood Academy in Chard students and staff did the Harlem Shake - the latest dance craze sweeping the world - while red noses and clothes were donned by youngsters at Swanmead School in Ilminster.

Sainsbury's in Chard raised more than £400 by dressing up and holding several games, while cakes aplenty were sold by staff at Pure Beauty in Chard and Adorn hair salon in Ilminster.
