TRAFFIC in a hurry to get to Hinkley Point must not think they can get away with speeding through Cannington.

That’s the message from police in the region after the Hinkley C building project moved a step closer last month.

Following the agreement over the energy price between the Government and EDF Energy, thousands of lorries are likely to be trundling through Cannington soon.

In advance of the traffic increase, police have secured extra funding for the Speed Watch band of volunteers in Cannington to upgrade their equipment.

Sergeant Steve Crago said: “The Cannington Community Speed Watch is a glowing example of how residents can be empowered to police their own communities.

“For the past two years, the dedication of the volunteers has seen the number of speeding motorists travelling through the village fall to below two per cent.

“This is excellent news and this high-tech equipment from the Police Community Trust Fund will assist the group in becoming even more effective.”

The new equipment is easier to handle, reducing the size of the traditional hand-held ‘speed guns’ to devices the size of a mobile phone.
