A TALENTED young florist has beaten off competition from 40 peers to win a national competition.
Jacalyn Dobson, 23, who has worked at Cottage Flowers in Ilminster for nine years, became the senior floral art champion at the National Federation of Young Farmers' Clubs' national final at Malvern Autumn Show over the weekend.
The young woman from Buckland St Mary impressed judges - and plenty of other people - with her presentation hand-tied bouquet which was required to convey the best of British farming.
She said: “I did quite well in another competition recently and then had a letter come through from Young Farmers' to ask if I would represent Devon at the finals.
“We had an hour to create our pieces in the open competition and I had some really positive comments even during it - a lot of people were taking an interest in what I was doing, so that was great for my confidence.
“I feel really chuffed to have won. The trophy is huge! My mum was hysterical on the day and everyone at work is really proud.”
Angie Blackwell, owner of Cottage Flowers, said: “Most florists enter a lot of competitions, but we very rarely do - it's something we have always talked about.
“We are all so proud of Jacalyn here. She really deserves this national recognition because she works so hard and is a very passionate florist.”
