Search for a gold star youngster
4:36pm Tuesday 24th September 2013 in News
DO you know a youth group or an individual who is worthy of a Gold Star Award in the Chard, Ilminster or Crewkerne areas?
The awards – run each year by South Somerset District Council – recognise the amazing feats of under 18-year-olds, as well as adults working with young people in a voluntary capacity.
The council’s young people’s officer, Steve Barnes, said: “So many people put in hours of their own time to help young people in South Somerset and this night is to celebrate the incredible work they do as well as the remarkable young people themselves.
“There are 11 awards to give out but this is about more than trophies.
“This event aims to raise the profile of the many young people who are doing inspirational things to make a difference to their communities.”
An awards evening will be held at the Octagon Theatre, in Yeovil, on October 29.
Mr Barnes added: “As part of the awards night event we will also be showcasing the talent of local young people.
“Before the awards are handed out, we will have short performances including gymnastics and rock music.
“This year, we will even have a young magician.
“Atticus Bowring was bitterly disappointed last year as he was unable to perform due to coming down with tonsillitis shortly before the ceremony!”.
South Somerset District Council is looking for people to nominate any volunteers, organisations and individuals they would like to be rewarded for the hard work and dedication they’ve put in this year.
Nominating is easy, visit www.southsomerset.gov.uk/goldstars or call 01935- 462462 and ask for a nomination form.
Cllr Sylvia Seal, the council’s leisure and culture spokesman, said: “It is these dedicated volunteers, coaches and young people that make their youth clubs, groups and communities tick.
“Without their time, many of the rural villages would not have the facilities and activities that are so popular.
“This event is about giving something back to these people as well as recognising that so many young people have inspirational stories to tell.”
