Theft of staddle stones

THE theft of staddle stones in South Somerset is being investigated following the disappearance of several in recent months.
The traditional staddle stones are mushroom-shaped and are used to support barns and granaries and can be worth more than £400. It is believed up to ten of the stones have been stolen from across the district – with the most recent theft in North Perrott.
The stones are heavy and it is likely that two people would have been needed to lift them and a vehicle such as a van or flatbed truck used to take them away.
PC Chris Purcell, beat manager in Crewkerne, said: "We are investigating the theft of several of these staddle stones. The stones have become popular as garden ornaments and I would ask people to look out for them and let us know if they see them for sale in suspicious circumstances.
"The stones are not quick or easy to steal and it's possible someone has seen something which could help us. Anyone who has seen activity in their community which they have found suspicious should be contact the police."
