ATC cadets are hitting their targets

CADETS from the Ilminster squadron Air Training Corps are on target with their weapons training.
The eight cadets, after receiving comprehensive training from qualified instructors, had to pass a test to show they were ready to take to the shooting range for the first time.
Flight Lieutenant Steve Penny, Officer Commanding of 2381 Ilminster Squadron, said: “Marksmanship is one of our most popular activities.” But he said that concentrating on targets in the distance and firing at them with consistent accuracy was not easy.
“It requires focus, agility and a very steady hand,” he said. “We teach our new cadets to handle a variety of weapons safely.
“Firing is always done in the prone position and at static targets. During their time in the ATC, a cadet will experience different types of weapons and could even take part in shooting competitions if they really prove their skills.”
The successful Ilminster cadets were Ben Udall, Alex Jackson, Hugo Hammond, Natalie Chick, Joel Ingarfield, Nick Parkinson, Matthew Biggs and Jacob Hughes.
The ATC is a national voluntary youth organisation, open to young people aged between 13 and 20.
Cadets are not obliged to join the Armed Forces but many choose to do so. Flying, gliding, sports and adventure training are some of the activities Air Cadets take part in.
