County initiative to stop young people sleeping rough

AN initiative to stop young people becoming homeless goes live in Somerset in May.
The county and district councils have combined with youth housing providers to provide supported accommodation for 16- to 24-year-olds.
The Pathways to Independence service will identify those at risk of homelessness, and work with families, schools, colleges and pupil referral units to help them stay at home.
Ongoing support will be offered through a range of accommodation with help to get into training or employment, improve well-being and encourage them to live independently.
Cllr Frances Nicholson, county council cabinet member for children and families, said: “This service will have a big impact on reducing the number of young people who are homeless in the county and give vulnerable young people a more positive future.”
