Family fun day is a big success for Special Horses charity

A FUN day held at Horton village hall on Monday in aid of Special Horses for Special Children was a great success.

Mayor of Chard Cllr Cathie Morrison opened the event and stayed to enjoy the afternoon with husband Jim and their grandson Sam – and she even took part in the hobby horse racing.

More than 20 stalls offered crafts and gift items and fun things for the children, such as face painting, crafting and glitter tattoos. Chard entertainer John Gudge gave his time free of charge and crooned throughout the afternoon and acted as MC.

Kelly Leigh Dancers brought some Gangnam dancing to the mix, along with balloon twister Professor Balloonin’ Bonkers, also known as Crewkerne town crier David Craner.

Sue’s Kitchen served teas and cakes and photographer Hayley Tigerfly pictured children on the back of a Margaret Spencer rocking horse on loan for the day from the retired Crewkerne craftswoman. All these contributors gave their time to the charity.

The organisers would like to thank everyone for their support – particularly the businesses in Chard and Ilminster which gave to the raffle and Yvonne Bailey of Chard who stayed up to 10pm on Sunday baking cakes as a donation.

The event attracted families from Chard, Crewkerne and Ilminster, some of whom have children who have used the therapy sessions the charity offers at its specialist centre with positive results.

The Chard Mayor, a visitor to Special Horses for Special Children at its VIP day, has already offered to pay for the hire of the Guildhall for another similar event before the end of her term of office.

Plans are also afoot for an outdoor fun day at the home of the charity, Scrapton Farm, near Chard, when the weather improves and children can meet some of the special horses.

Chairman of trustees Claire Hart declared the event very successful and said she was pleased to see such a good attendance for the fundraiser, the first of many needed to keep the charity on its feet. For more information about the charity or to make a donation visit www.specialhorsesfor|specialchildren.com
