Fire crews tackling 'large' blaze at Chard scrap yard

FIRE crews are tackling a blaze at a car scrap yard in Beeching Close, Chard, this afternoon.

Two fire appliances from Chard responded to the incident around 1.20pm.

Upon arrival, crews confirmed a 'large fire' was in progress and requested a hazardous materials officer attend due to the nature of the the materials involved.

Less than 10 minutes later the incident commander requested a third appliance for manpower and safety and crews began tackling the fire with breathing apparatus, one foam branch and one covering jet.

By 2.10pm the fire had been reduced to a manageable size and discussions are taking place with the hazardous materials officer on the next course of action. Crews are also using a mechanical digger to pull the scrap metal out of the bay together with breathing apparatus and a hose reel jet.
