THE latest project carried out by volunteers keen on making the town’s train station looking neat and tidy at Crewkerne has been to unearth an old flower bed.

But the Friends of Crewkerne Station found that the job was much bigger than anticipated because hidden beneath the surface of the bed in the grass bank were bricks and rubble.

Volunteer Gail Coleshill said: “I think we bit off a bit more than we knew! It took half a dozen of us ages to clear out the old bricks and put a bit of top soil down.

“We think there must be half a demolished building under that bank!”

Misterton Parish Council has donated some daffodil bulbs through Cllr Robbie Heyd-Smith to plant there and around the station.

An open day will be held at the station TODAY (Saturday) where there will be an exhibition of old photos from the station, an opportunity to see what the Friends have been doing on the platform over the past year, an 00-gauge model of the Bulleid Light Pacific steam engine Crewkerne running in the booking office and a food hamper to be won.

The Friends of Crewkerne Station latest project is unearthing an old flower bed in the grass bank beyond the bridge. The station working volunteers tackled the outline of the bed with enthusiasm but found a big hidden challenge. Hidden beneath the surface were bricks and rubble.

Chairman Tony Reese said: “The open day is an opportunity for people to see what a difference the Friends have made to their station.”
