Chard residents oppose low-cost homes

RESIDENTS have opposed plans to build 12 new low-cost homes in an already densely populated area in Chard.

Summerfield Developments Ltd have applied to South Somerset District Council for permission to develop land at the rear of Cedar Close to be accessed off the busy Glynswood.

Members of Chard Town Council's planning and highways committee were last night (Tuesday) set to discuss the application at their monthly meeting but a number of residents have written to the district council opposing the plans for a dozen bungalows on a piece of waste land.

Bryan Fowler of Cedar Close said: "The proposed development will lead to an in-crease in traffic along Cedar Close and this will lead to extra health and safety issues.

"The layout of the road on the proposed drawings could enable a future road extension to be built to provide a vehicle access link to Zembard Lane between the cemetery and Holyrood School. This is unacceptable.

"The plans should be amended to clearly ensure that his cannot occur in the future as this would increase traffic flow within Cedar Close to unacceptable levels leading to even greater road safety hazards, particularly at the existing road junctions."

Other residents have said that the earmarked land is a haven for wildlife while some are concerned that emergency vehicles would have problems getting in and out of the development.

But a spokesman for chartered architects Reed Holland Associates, on behalf of Summerfield, said: "The new shared access road serving the development will be designed to Somerset County Council highways standards to ensure adequate access and turning facilities for residents, service and emergency vehicles."

And they added: "The new town centre location makes the development sustainable from a transport perspective with schools, shops, services and employment within walking distance.

"We consider that the site's relationship to the existing facilities and services in Chard and the availability of public transport makes it an acceptable site for new housing.

"We believe that the site at Cedar Close is an opportunity to provide low cost housing in a convenient location close to the town centre and employment."

Am I missing something !! BUT to my way of thinking 12 BUNGALOWS is NOT low cost housing.
Maybe for incomers but not Chard residents. Yet another stunt by GREEDY developers.

It,s not low pricesed houses that is needed in chard. I work 2 hours a day and my partner does aswell on the opposite shift to me.I have been on the transfer list ffor 3 years now and nothing. I share a bedroom with my children and it is not on. Maybe if i was not working and and claim everything that is going i would get rehoused. I pay my rent on time and nothing. What does it take to get rehoused in chard. I know go on the dole and claim everything. Hello you have been rehoused. I have neveer asked for anything. I don,t claim anything but all i would like is to be is rehoused to give my children a better life. I pay my way and work for everything. It can't be too much to ask. The way that i feel at the moment i think that my kids would be better in care.At least they would have a room to them selves
