Cash appeal for cyclone victims
ORGANISERS of the annual Operation Christmas Child shoebox appeal in Chard and Ilminster are urging people to support the relief effort in cyclone-ravaged Burma by making cash donations.
Pam and Peter Pike of Ilminster co-ordinate the festive project each year to send thousands of shoeboxes filled with essential items to children throughout the world who have been caught up in wars, natural disasters and extreme poverty.
But although the thought of Christmas seems a long way off, the couple hope that people will be generous in their support of the Burmese people ... and that support is desperately needed NOW!
Cyclone Nargis struck Burma earlier this month and it is believed that it may have killed 100,000 people with many thousands more left homeless.
Emergency aid relief is slowly getting into the country but now Pam and Peter are hoping that local people will help the effort.
"Our charity - Samaritan's Purse - is already on the case like so many other aid agencies and charities," said Pam.
"I would like to invite our supporters who know about the Christmas shoebox appeal and trust the integrity of our charity to send a donation direct to Samaritan's Purse.
"I'm sure many folk will be wanting to send donations to a variety of charities who are all working for the same end."
Just £20 could provide a Samaritan's Purse emergency kit and £10 would be enough to pay for immediate food aid for one family.
Call Samaritan's Purse on 0870 870 833 or 020 8559 2044 to make a donation.
