THE Cricket St Thomas baby camel has been named!

The News was inundated with suggestions after we asked readers to name the female Bactarian camel - but there could only be one winner.

Wildlife park workers voted to call her Lottie, which was chosen by Jean Mitchell of Ilminster.

Jean, aged 80, decided on Lottie as it was the name of her daughter's shitzhu dog.

She said: "I've always loved the name and my daughter's dog was a lovely pet so it seemed like a good choice.

"I saw the competition in the paper and thought I'd go for it - I couldn't believe it when I found out I'd won, I was so happy."

As part of her prize, Jean received a year's family pass to the wildlife park, which she hopes to use with her eight year-old granddaughter Zoe.

"It will be really nice to bring Zoe to Cricket St Thomas in the holidays," she said.

Lottie, who was born in March, is being hand-reared by park keepers as her mother has a history of rejecting her calves.

Park education officer Andy Holden said: "She's doing really well, we've cut her feeds down to just four a day and she's just beginning to eat solids.

"When she's fully weaned we will start to introduce her to the other camels and have our fingers crossed that she will settle in successfully."
