Toilets closed after spate of vandalism
 |
| THE sign placed on the door of the toilets in Boden Street car park. |
PUBLIC toilets in Chard town centre have been closed because of continued vandalism.
The doors to the toilets in the Boden Street car park were locked after council staff were left exasperated by the work of mindless hooligans.
South Somerset District Council confirmed last week it was disappointed to discover damage caused by vandalism to the sink plumbing, toilet flushes and the toilet pans in the disabled loos.
A spokesman said: "The disabled toilets were reopened on April 15 but further damage has since been done to the main toilets so further repairs are now being organised."
Clerk to Chard Town Council, John Furze, said he was dismayed the toilets had been vandalised.
"Once again we have public facilities which are there for the benefit of the people of Chard which are being abused by a mindless minority," he said. "This is deplorable."
Cllr Dave Bulmer, who represents Chard on both town and district councils, said he was extremely concerned at the ongoing problems.
"It is very disappointing to hear of this vandalism," he said.
"The toilets are there for law-abiding people to use. It is very sad."
The 'closed' signs on the toilets had been removed yesterday morning - council chiefs will be hoping that the vandals do not return.

Bring back Bernie, he would have dealt with it without the Bull and we could then all use them without a problem
