Fight back against fly-tipping

Bags of rubbish at Chard Tesco's recycling banks last week

PEOPLE in Chard are being urged to report individuals seen dumping rubbish illegally following a spate of incidents in the town.

Chard councillor and Somerset County Council leader Jill Shortland said communities needed to work together to stop fly-tipping after bags of rubbish were found dumped beside recycling banks at the town's Tesco store last week.

She said: "Fly-tipping is totally and utterly unacceptable and we as a community need to stand up to the people who are responsible.

"If anyone witnesses somebody dumping rubbish they should take down their number plate and report them."

She added: "I have received reports of people driving up to sites and literally throwing bags of rubbish out of their car windows - it's absolutely disgraceful.

"There are enforcement officers patrolling the town and anyone caught fly-tipping will face a fine."

Under the Government's Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act,fly-tipping is punishable by up to five years in prison or an unlimited fine.

The measures were introduced in a bid to protect the English countryside from harmful industrial waste being dumped - something which occurs, somewhere in the country every 35 seconds.

Cllr Shortland said: "The cost of having to clean up the rubbish falls upon the taxpayer so it is everyone's responsibility to ensure recycling sites are kept clear.

"I would ask people to put their rubbish in the slots provided and leave the area as you would expect to find it.

"We want Chard to be a nice, clean town to live - not a dirty, disgusting place."

I week has gone by since the above comments and still the rubbish builds up outside the old railway station. Are we waiting for wildlife to move in so we class it as a wildlife sanctuary or perhaps if it is their long enough we could get it listed.
