French town hopes to rekindle friendship with Chard
The Mayor, Cllr Martin Wale, has received a letter from the Deputy Mayor of Morangis
The Mayor, Cllr Martin Wale, has received a letter from the Deputy Mayor of Morangis

THE Deputy Mayor of Chard's twin French town of Morangis is hoping that official links between the two communities can be restored.

Morangis is a small town situated close to Paris and the first links were made in 1983 and continued informally for several years. The decision to twin formally was made in 1993 and the official ceremonies were carried out in both towns the following year.

However in recent years the official links' have fallen away after Chard's twinning committee with Morangis disbanded.

Now the only real tie with the French town is when Chard's youth football teams visit each year for an international soccer tournament.

But now Morangis' Deputy Mayor Bernard Bigotte has written to Chard Town Council hoping to re-establish and strengthen the links.

"It has been several years since the links of friendship between our two towns were broken and we regret this," he said in a letter to the Chard Mayor, Cllr Martin Wale.

"Apart from the annual visit of your football team during our international tournament and several personal contacts with friends in Chard nothing happens between our two towns."

He has said he will be visiting Chard later this year to meet council chiefs in the hope of forging a relationship for the future.

Although Chard councillors were happy to support the idea when they met for their monthly town council meeting last week there were concerns about how far they should get involved.

Deputy Mayor Cllr Cathie Morrison said: "We should keep our ties with Morangis but we shouldn't tie Chard Town Council down to this ab-out forming a committee.

"We would, however, welcome any members of the public who would like to get involved."

Cllr Dave Hill said: "This is an ex-cellent idea and I'm all for it but there would need to be a committee formed for fundraising."

The Mayor reminded councillors that the council had no budget for twinning activities and they decided to defer making any final decision to see if anybody comes forward interested in forming a committee.
