Town says 'No' to plastic bags
 |
| THESE shoppers in the Market Square are already looking forward to the day when Ilminster becomes a plastic bag free town. |
THE Mayor of Ilminster, Cllr Carol Goodall, and members of South Somerset Climate Action group have taken the lead in encouraging shoppers to say no thanks' to plastic bags.
Today (Thursday) is Bring-Your-Own-Bag Day in Ilminster and organisers are hoping shoppers will use their own bags rather than rely on the plastic bags available in shops.
Most shops are fully behind the scheme and Ilminster Chamber of Commerce group has given its support.
A spokesman said: "Members have been discussing plastic bags for some time and this one-day experiment may help traders to decide whether they could soon declare the town plastic bag free! Nobody wants to see a customer upset and shopkeepers cannot afford to lose a sale so shoppers themselves are asked to say no thanks' to new plastic bags.
"Some traders are investigating bags made of corn starch for products like fish and meat. These bags are biodegradable but people shouldn't worry as they will certainly be able to get home before they fall apart!
"The bigger message, of course, is that we would be wise to make and use things which last, to use only what we really need, and to treat our planet and its resources as the treasures that they are. Future generations will thank us if we learn to be more careful."
Pamela Sellars, of the South Somerset Climate Action group, who organised a recent rubbish clearance in Old Road, created the idea of a single plastic bag free day to get things moving.
Leaflets and fliers have been promoted and Pamela has negotiated with the managers of Tesco and Co-op and visited all the shops in Ilminster.
"Nearly everyone we have spoken to is behind this," she said.

Of course, those people who opt not to use Tesco will probably not realise that Tesco have been encouraging the reduced use of plastic bag for some time, by offering reward points to those customer who bring their own bags , or re use other bags.

Of course, for many of us (for many years) the reward for re-using plastic carrier bags has been the smug satisfaction of an improved environment: we haven't needed the faux reward of a few points added to the supermarkets' method of tracking your every move!

If you have nothing to hide, you would not object to the "so called" tracking.
