Dairy Cattle (78): Greenslade Taylor Hunt report good entry in terms of numbers at 78, of better quality cattle sold to a bright trade. Prices reflected quality. Another super entry from the Evans of Carmarthen saw their 4 “Deri” heifers sold to £1880, £1820, £1800 and £1780. Others from Mr R Webb to £1600 and £1510; £1580 from Messrs M & K Churchill & Son; £1540 from Messrs RJ Goss & Son and £1500 from Messrs LG Bagg & Partners.

2nd quality cows sold to £1110 for Messrs GW Bevan & Son. Ayrshire calved heifers sold to £1000 for Mr H Bolderstone and £940 for Mr NC Taylor.

A good run of 29 incalf heifers from Mr N Taylor sold to £1180, £1120 and £1100.

3 yearling heifers at £400 for Messrs RJ Peach & Son.

Top price for young calves £435 for a cracking Blue bull from Messrs SW Batten & Sons. Charolais to £395 from Messrs SM & DM Turner. Other Blues £380 Messrs M & B Humphry; £371 from Messrs TE Pocock & Co and £370 East Avercombe Farm Ltd. Simmental bulls to £330 from Messrs SW Batten & Sons. Other Charolais £315 from Messrs WJ Burge & Sons. Many more strong bulls over £300 today, mediums £240-£320, small bulls from £150.

A sound heifer trade when smart Blues sold to £334 from Messrs WTR Ash & Son. Charolais heifers £308 from Messrs SM & DM Turner and £298 from Messrs TE Pocock & Co. Other Blues £288, £285, £272 and Sussex cross to £270. The best heifers ranged from £250 upwards, mediums £180 plus. Smaller Blues in particular £100-£180.

A much keener trade for native breeds when a lot of small calves were forward. Top Angus £290 from Woollacott Partners. Store Lambs (2250): A slightly larger entry of 2250 store lambs sold to a shade dearer trade for the best and an equally firm trade for the medium and smalls. However, a higher proportion of small lambs pegged the averages. A Suffolk ram lamb topped the section when it sold for £80 from Mr JD Westlake. Store lambs sold to £78.50 from Mr KJ Govier. Others £78 from Messrs AS Poultney & Sons; £76 from Mr JC Salmon; £75.50 from Mr N Flower; £74.50 from GH Woollatt Farming; £74 from Messrs FJ Hayes & Sons; £72 from Mr JS Swain and £71 from Mr T Woollacott (x2). Mediums ranged £55-£65, very small nearly all £20 plus. Overall average £57.58.

Ram Lambs sold as store lambs are to be declared. Those lots so declared to not contain any ram lambs, which are found post sale to contain undeclared ram lambs, will attract a 25% reduction in the sale price of any ram lambs found. Similarly Cryptorchids are to be declared.

Grazing Ewes and Rams (548): A smaller entry of 548 grazing ewes and rams sold to a dearer trade for all forward, although an overall poorer quality pegged the averages. The best sold to £96 from Messrs PH & GO Green. Couples (101 Ewes and 169 Lambs): Fewer couples forward, being 101 ewes and 169 lambs, sold to an improved trade when many more could have been sold to advantage. The better types not quite hitting last week’s heights, however top doubles to £210 (£70/life) and £208 (£69.33/life) from Messrs DE & SJ Cheacker, who sold others at £190 (£63.33/life). Other best types to £205 (£68.33/life) from Mrs L Rea and £188 (£62.67/life) from Mr CL Popham.

Singles in demand to £152 (£76/life) from Mr T Salvidge. Others to £142 (£71/life) from Mr DJ Cole; £140 (£70/life) from Mr J Jarman; £135 (£67.50/life) from Mr CL Popham and Mr T Salvidge. Overall average up to £59.33/life.

Breeding Ewes (150): A large non catalogued sale of 150 breeding ewes sold to £105 for inlamb Suffolk ewes from Mr CJ Love. Others from Mr D Powell to £102.

Goats (58): A large entry of 58 goats sold to a very strong trade. Billies sold to £101 and nannies to £84.50 and £80 all from Bagborough Farm Ltd.

Orphan Lambs (43): A larger entry of 43 orphan lambs sold to a strong trade. Large lambs to £50 (x4) from Mr AJ Green. Others to £35 (x2) from Mr P Cowell and £30 from Mr AW Paynter. Overall average £22.81.

UTM (65) and OTM Prime Cattle (8): Greenslade Taylor Hunt report a quieter day in the primestock ring but a packed ring of 15 buyers strongly competed for all on offer, even non farm assured and/or overage, having buyers for all types here at Sedgemoor! An outstanding consignment of cattle from Messrs PJ & BM Coles topped the market with butchers heifers which realised 240.5ppk, 228.5, 217.5, 209.5 and 199.5ppk. Messrs AAB Rowe & Son sold a BRBx heifer to 214ppk; Mr PA Strawbridge’s Limousin cross heifer sold to 212.5ppk; Mr MJ Chilcott’s BRBx heifer sold to 210.5ppk and Mr RW Fry’s Limousin cross heifer sold to 210ppk.

STEERS a very variable selection with some -O2/P+2 types which pegged the overall average.
