A STUNNING home on 'McMafia Mews' has been put up for sale for £2.6 million - with one agent reporting a buzz around the cobbled streets on the back of the hit show.

Lead character Alex Godman, played by James Norton, starts out as a respectable banker who finds himself involved in Russian organised crime.

And the successful financier lives in a stylish property on Cranley Mews, South Kensington, in the BBC drama.

But while studio bosses give the impression he's living on the cobbled street, the interior is actually a six-bedroom townhouse in Wandsworth.

One estate agency which specialises in selling mews homes has reported an increase in interest in the quaint, character-filled homes, many of which were once used as stables, garages and servants' quarters.

The 1,158 sq/ft pad, which is slightly larger than the average house in England and Wales, has three bedrooms, two bathrooms, an open-plan living room and a kitchen.

It is on the doorstep of Old Brompton Road and Fulham Road and the asking price is more than ten times the average figure paid for a home in England and Wales.

James Robinson, general manager of Lurot Brand, said: "Cranley is a lovely mews and there has been a lot of interest in mews homes in South Kensington since McMafia started this year. Chard & Ilminster News: MARVELOUS MEWS: This stunning home on ‘McMafia Mews’ has been put up for sale for £2.5 million - with agents reporting a buzz around the cobbled streets on the back of the hit show. "It is a bit like when Layer Cake was released. Daniel Craig's character lived on Queens Gate Mews and there was so much interest on the back of it.

"Mews houses have always been places where naughty things have happened. There is always something interesting going on. The Profumo Affair was on a mews.

"In McMafia they say he lives in a normal house, but Cranley Mews has always been a considered, desirable mews. Chard & Ilminster News: MARVELOUS MEWS: This stunning home on ‘McMafia Mews’ has been put up for sale for £2.5 million - with agents reporting a buzz around the cobbled streets on the back of the hit show. "This three bedroom home is a stunning example of a mews and in a great location.

"It is finished with style and a layout that makes this property both practical and beautiful.

"It is deeper than most mews homes and is open plan with an industrial feel."

Mews houses were originally used to house staff and horses before becoming popular among businesses such as garages.

Many would have pubs on them and they were known as locations which were notorious for nefarious activities, such as cockfighting. Chard & Ilminster News: MARVELOUS MEWS: This stunning home on ‘McMafia Mews’ has been put up for sale for £2.5 million - with agents reporting a buzz around the cobbled streets on the back of the hit show. Their private location would make them popular for celebrities and criminals.

But over the past 30 to 40 years they have become extremely desirable homes, with buyers loving the quirky designs, cobbled streets and secure locations.

Mr Robinson added: "A lot people have a mews as a second home.

"Musicians and actors and actresses love them because they are discreet and don't have communal areas like apartments. They can lock up and leave.

"Fathers buy them for their daughters because they are safe, newly married couples live in them for a couple of years before starting a family and if you're a man about town it's much cooler to say you live in a mews than a flat.

"I once sold a house to a Russian gentleman. He didn't speak English and went everywhere with two bodyguards.

"He bought the mews next to one he owned, in cash, because he didn't want a next-door neighbour.

"They're good investments because they are always desirable and they aren't building any more. We get mews collectors - people who own four, five or six of them."
